Priyanka Gandhi termed it a “victory for the Constitution” and a “black day” for the government, saying the Centre’s “conspiracy to stay in power” was stopped. She argued that the move was “not about empowering women” but about reshaping India’s electoral map. She also challenged the government to implement the original 2023 law instead of “misleading women.” The BJP countered by accusing the Opposition of blocking a major reform. With 298 votes in favour and 230 against, the bill could not pass the two-thirds mark. The result has intensified the political battle, with both sides claiming to stand for women’s rights, while the larger debate now focuses on intent versus reform.
