More than three lakh homes were destroyed and one crore people were affected as sea waters along the Bengal coast and rivers started swelling and breached embankments, a little after Cyclone Yaas made landfall at Odisha at 9.30am on Wednesday. The only life lost was that of a fisherman, who had ventured out to sea, ignoring warnings. Kanai Giri (55) from East Midnapore’s Mandarmani had set out, along with six others, when their boat sank in the choppy waters. While the others managed to swim ashore, Giri drowned.
