Kolkata:
CBI on Monday lodged an FIR in the murder case of Trinamool Congress leader
Tapan Dutta, following a Calcutta High Court order. Dutta, an environmentalist and politician from Bally, was gunned down while returning home in May 2011.
On June 10 this year, the HC had ordered a CBI inquiry into the killing. It had told the central agency to investigate and prosecute the case, and even conduct a fresh probe.
CBI officials had earlier collected relevant documents from the CID and registered a case after examining them.
According to locals, Dutta, a member of a local panchayat, had been protesting against illegal filling up of water bodies in Bally-Jagachha.
The murder case was heard first in the trial court and then moved to the HC and finally the
Supreme Court, and now a fresh trial is set to commence. An HC division bench had ordered a re-trial in 2016.
