Kolkata: A 125-ft-tall statue of Syama Prasad Mookerjee would be erected in the city to honour the legacy of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder in his 125th birth anniversary year, announced minister Agnimitra Paul. The statue may come up in Bhowanipore, where Mookerjee’s house is situated.
“The chief minister has said a 125-ft statue of Syama Prasad Mookerjee will be built to mark his 125th birth anniversary. The foundation stone will be laid on July 5,” Paul said. “The site for the statue will be finalised after consultations with PWD officials and information and cultural affairs (I&CA) department officials. A yearlong, statewide celebration will be organised by the I&CA department.” .
BJP state functionaries said that the statue would stand as a cultural pride of Bengal and serve as an inspiration for future generations, reminding people of Mookerjee’s vision for a strong, unified India.
At present, the tallest statue of Mookerjee in the country is located at Rashtra Prerna Sthal in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The bronze statue, designed by sculptors

A functionary of Bengal BJP said the statue in Kolkata was likely to be built in Bhowanipore, the neighbourhood of Mookerjee’s ancestral house. He said a senior functionary from the Centre was likely to attend the foundation stone laying ceremony.
