Kolkata: About 6,72,000 candidates appeared for the West Bengal Central School Service Commission's (WBSSC) recruitment exam for clerks at the secondary and higher secondary levels for 2,989 vacant positions. The staff recruitment process started nearly a year after the Supreme Court's April 3 order cancelling the appointments of 25,753 teachers and staff.Education minister Bratya Basu posted on X after the exam ended at 2 pm, saying, "A total of 4,893 candidates from other states participated, including over 3,000 from the double-engine govt states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. This serves as a clear example of candidates' unwavering trust in the transparency and impartiality of the Bengal govt, regardless of political affiliation, despite misinformation."

Arbind Yadav from Bihar, who appeared for the test at Maharaja Manindra Chandra College, said, "The recruitment test was not conducted for the last few years in our state. So, I am applying for govt jobs in neighbouring states." Sources said around 1,200 candidates were from the 2016 recruitment panel, while most were fresh candidates.Many candidates expressed concern about the huge number of applicants appearing for the exam, while several others were still worried about the recruitment process.
