Uber launches bike taxi services in Kochi, Tvm
Kochi: Ride-hailing platform Uber has launched Bike Taxi and Parcel services in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, aiming to provide a high-speed, low-cost solution to the notorious traffic congestion in the cities."The revamped service is designed to function with the same seamless interface as Uber's existing auto and taxi features where the customers can book services using the app. Rates for bike taxi services start at a budget-friendly Rs 25 for the first three km," a spokesperson said. The services will be available in the city and outskirts. For instance, in Kochi, bike services can be availed in city outskirts such as Fort Kochi, Vypeen, Paravur and Aluva, the official pointed out. Beyond passenger transport, the Bike Parcel service too can be availed. "The service will facilitate residents to send small packages across the city in a cost-effective manner," he added. Uber has also started registering interested two-wheeler owners for the Uber bike taxi service. To boost enrolment, the app-hailing service has offered a joining bonus of Rs 1,000, while promising a minimum monthly revenue of Rs 35,000. The bike owner needs to carry a helmet for the commuters as well. While vehicles registered post-2012 are considered, preference is given to recently purchased two-wheelers. "The bike taxi and parcel services are available in the Uber app. However, the waiting time for bike taxi service is more now, while the cost is much cheaper. It will be a good option for commuters during the peak hours through the congested city roads," said Niranjan R, a native of Tripunithura. Meanwhile, the traditional autorickshaw and taxi driver unions, which form a significant part of Kochi's labour force, have expressed immediate concerns. "The low pricing of bike taxis creates an unfair playing field that threatens our livelihoods. We'll oppose the attempts of the corporate to further eat into our revenue sources. A lot of people have stopped operating hire services even with the coming of online booking auto and taxi services," said Syamanda Bhadran, district president of Ernakulam District Autorickshaws Union, affiliated to the CITU. Uber first attempted to launch the bike service in the state in 2017, however, the state transport department then rejected the application, expressing concern that the traffic mishaps will multiply if two-wheeler taxi services are allowed on the road. However, bike taxi services were permitted in neighbouring states like Karnataka, following a court order last year. "They have submitted all necessary documents and taken the licence now," said transport commissioner C Nagaraju IPS.
