Kochi: Authorities issued a caution to residents living along the banks of Thodupuzha and Muvattupuzha rivers as water from Malankara Dam will be released for emergency shutter repair. The repair work, part of monsoon preparedness measures, will begin on Tuesday and continue for three weeks. Officials said the water level in the dam will be reduced to 36.9m. As excess water is discharged, the water level in both rivers may rise, prompting authorities to caution people residing on either side of the rivers to remain vigilant. Executive engineer of Muvattupuzha Valley Irrigation Project said steps must be taken to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply to Arakkulam, Velliyamattom, Kudayathoor and Alakode panchayats. Kerala Water Authority and local bodies have been directed to arrange alternative measures and take necessary precautions. The water level will be restored after completion of the repair works.
