Of the 51 houses completed in the first phase, 14 were allotted to Hindu families, who were given priority without a draw of lots. The decision was taken to accommodate the applicants from the community in the first phase of the project itself. The remaining 37 beneficiaries, all from the Muslim community, were selected through a draw. AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi, who was the chief guest at the function, said she was proud that every party did its best to fulfil promises to provide the support and necessary help needed by the survivors of the tragedy.
IUML national general secretary P K Kunhalikutty presided over the event. Each 1,060 sqft house, built on eight cents, has three bedrooms, a kitchen, dining hall, work area and sit-out and a small garden. Interlocked tiled roads have been laid, and water and electricity connections have been provided. The homes come furnished with beds, sofas, dining tables, chairs, clocks as well as other appliances. The houses have a paved courtyard and a seven-metre-wide brick-paved road in front. A well and a large tank have been installed to provide clean water to the homes. The construction was completed with a foundation that allows for vertical expansion.Kunhalikutty stated that facilities for places of worship will be arranged in the project area. Although there are temples, churches, mosques and cultural centres nearby, Muslim League will provide space for prayer as per the residents' wishes. The housing project also includes amenities such as a community hall and a park. The project area was made green by planting trees and shrubs. The project site is located within 8km radius of Kalpetta town, he said.
