Rajasthan constable suspended over links with international drug traffickers
JAISALMER: In a sensational and deeply concerning development, a major breach involving an international narcotics syndicate has come to light within the Sri Ganganagar police system. Pakistani drug traffickers, operating through cross-border drone deliveries, allegedly established links with a constable posted in the CDR (Call Detail Record) cell at the Superintendent of Police (SP) office, enabling the movement of 10 kg heroin consignments worth crores of rupees into India.
The accused, constable Mangat Ram, has been suspended after preliminary investigations revealed his role in assisting smugglers in receiving and distributing heroin dropped via drones from across the Pakistan border.
The investigation into the matter has been handed over to the Additional Superintendent of Police.
According to reliable sources and senior police officials, on March 26, a major consignment of 10.830 kg of heroin, dropped by Pakistani smugglers using a drone, was seized in the Rawla police station area (Chak 7-8 SKM). A joint operation by district police and CID (Intelligence Branch) led to the arrest of five accused: Harmesh alias Jora Singh (32), Ranjit Singh (29), Sonu Singh (25), Gurpreet Singh (21), and Kirtan Singh (19), all residents of Punjab. A total of 20 packets of heroin were recovered, marked with luminous radium strips.
Sources revealed that during another operation involving an 11 kg heroin consignment, Mangat Ram allegedly attempted to mislead police teams by providing incorrect call location and CDR data.
This raised suspicion among officers. Further investigation revealed that he was not only in direct contact with one of the arrested smugglers but also attempted to help them evade arrest.
Initial inquiries ordered by SP Harishankar Yadav exposed his links with cross-border drug syndicates. After nearly a month-long detailed probe, sufficient evidence was gathered, leading to his suspension about ten days ago. Departmental proceedings have been initiated, and strict action, including dismissal and possible arrest, may follow based on the final report.
Police sources further disclosed that during the March 26 operation, field teams relied on real-time data from the CDR cell. However, the constable’s misleading inputs could have compromised the operation and allowed smugglers to escape.
Additional SP Harishankar Yadav confirmed the development, stating that Mangat Ram tried to misguide the Rawla police team in a heroin seizure case exceeding 10 kg and was found to be in contact with one of the accused. The case is now under investigation by Additional SP (Headquarters) R.P. Sharma.
Authorities have not ruled out his involvement in other narcotics cases, and the investigation is ongoing.
