Reinstate standard edible oil pack sizes, SOPA urges govt

Indore: The Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA) has urged the Centre to reinstate standardised packaging norms for edible oils, warning that deregulation of pack sizes has led to widespread consumer confusion and distorted competition in the market.In a representation to the department of consumer affairs, the industry body said the removal of standard pack sizes from Jan, 2023 has resulted in a proliferation of non-uniform quantities such as 350 ml, 440 ml, 810 ml and 910 ml, making it difficult for consumers to compare prices and assess value."We have written to the govt demanding restoration of standard pack sizes, as a move intended to provide freedom of choice has resulted in freedom to mislead," said SOPA executive director DN Pathak.SOPA said visually similar pouches with different quantities are often priced in a way that misleads buyers. "A consumer is often presented with two visually similar pouches, one containing 880 ml and another 910 ml. The lower-priced pack appears cheaper but actually has a higher cost per litre," Pathak said.The industry body argued that the current system, which mandates declaration of unit sale price, has failed to address the issue. "The typical retail consumer does not calculate per unit prices while shopping. The unit price is often displayed in small print or in paise with decimals, making it ineffective in real buying situations," Pathak added.SOPA also flagged that deregulation has created an uneven playing field, forcing even compliant manufacturers to adopt non-standard pack sizes to remain competitive. "Even honest manufacturers are being compelled to follow non-standard pack sizes just to stay relevant in the market," he said.The association has sought immediate restoration of standard packaging quantities, along with a transition period for manufacturers to adjust production and packaging systems without disruption.
