Rising summer temp linked to surge in gastro cases in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: The ongoing summer heat is causing an increase in cases of viral or bacterial infections, particularly gastroenteritis, also known as stomach flu, with a rise in patients arriving at hospitals in the city.

While around 10 to 15 cases are being reported at the Govt Fever Hospital in Nallakunta, Niloufer Hospital in Lakdikapul is receiving around 20 to 25 such cases daily, with most of them being children. The urban public health centres (UPHC) and community health centres (CHCs) in Hyderabad are also witnessing more than the usual number of stomach flu cases.

"Of the total cases we receive each day, around 25-30% are of gastroenteritis. While acute diarrhoea is prevalent throughout the year, the cases began increasing after the end of February. Patients are complaining of fever, diarrhoea, weakness, vomiting, headaches, food poisoning, indigestion, cramps, and dehydration, among other symptoms. Some are even being admitted to ICU due to severe illness," said Dr G Swapna, senior paediatrician at Niloufer Hospital.

Gastroenteritis, caused by viral or bacterial infection, is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines, leading to diarrhoea, vomiting, and other ailments.

According to doctors, gastroenteritis cases are likely to increase in the coming days as temperatures rise. One of the primary contributing factors doctors attribute to the surge in gastroenteritis cases is foodborne illness.

They explain that the growth of bacteria and other pathogens accelerates during the summer, leading to food spoilage. Consumption of contaminated water and a lack of hygiene can also lead to gastroenteritis.
