Agartala: Biswabandhu Sen, the speaker of Tripura assembly, passed away early Friday morning at a hospital in Bengaluru, where he had been receiving treatment for over four and a half months following a massive cerebral stroke. He was 72.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Telangana governor Jishnu Dev Varma, and Tripura CM Manik Saha, among other dignitaries, expressed their condolences on Sen’s passing. “I am deeply pained by Biswabandhu Sen's demise. He will always be remembered for his significant contributions towards Tripura’s progress and his resolute commitment to numerous social causes,” said PM Modi.
Sen’s death has cast a pall of gloom across Tripura, with leaders from various political backgrounds and citizens mourning the loss of a respected public servant. The Tripura govt has declared three days of state mourning, with the national flag flown at half-mast and a public holiday observed on Friday.
Sen’s body will be transported to Tripura on Saturday, where it will be taken to the Tripura assembly for public homage before being moved to his hometown, Dharmanagar, for the final rites.
Sen's political career began in the 1970s as a Congress worker. He served as vice chairman of Dharmanagar Nagar Panchayat in 1988 and was elected as a member of the assembly (MLA) twice under the Congress banner. In 2017, he joined BJP and won elections in 2018 and 2023, eventually becoming the speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly in 2023.
CM Manik Saha expressed profound sorrow, stating, “His untimely demise is an irreparable loss for our state. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family members and followers during this difficult time.”
Union home minister Amit Shah also expressed deep sadness, offering condolences to Sen’s family and admirers.
Sen is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. His life was marked by a commitment to public service, earning admiration for his calm demeanor and dedication to parliamentary traditions.
