Politics of polarisation essential for survival of indigenous people: Sarma

Guwahati: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that practice of politics of polarisation, which is “between Assamese and Bangladeshis”, is essential for survival of indigenous people for the next 30 years.

Speaking to the media here in Guwahati, the CM said, “The polarization is not between Hindu and Muslim. The polarisation is between Assamese and Bangladeshis. That is the difference. We don’t fight with Assamese Muslims. We only fight with Bangladeshi Muslims. What is the problem with that? The Supreme Court has said that there is an invasion and if there is an invasion recognised by the apex court, then you have to protect your land. That is why I have taken oath as a CM. So, I am legally as well as ethically and politically correct.”


He added that Assam would not have been in the current situation if the Congress had fought against the ‘Miya people’ during their govt. “As an Assamese, I don’t want to surrender. So, I’ll fight and I’ll polarise,” he added.

Miya is a pejorative term used to describe the Bangladesh origin migrant Muslims here.

Sarma said that he was very happy that some people are getting disturbed due to the objections raised against Bangladesh origin Muslims during the Special Revision here in the state.

“I have advised my BJP workers to give more and more complaint filing Form 7 during the SR so that a kind of people realize that there is still some kind of resistance in the state. All the complaints have been raised on my order. There is nothing to hide in it. I have instructed them to do this so that they suffer and understand that the Assamese community is still alive,” he added.

He added, “Make them suffer. They will leave Assam only when they will suffer. Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP are against these people directly. This is not an issue. We are not hiding it. We are saying it openly. The present situation is such that they have even entered upper Assam areas also.”

The CM said that it does not matter for him how many abuses Congress hurls at him but the campaign against the Bangladesh origin migrant Muslims will continue as “this is a question of Assam’s very existence”.

Saying that steps taken during SR is just a preliminary step, he said, “When SIR will take place in Assam, four- five lakh Miya votes will be cut. Let the Congress abuse me as much as they want. My job is to make these people suffer.”

“When will we be careful if not now? That’s why no Assamese people have faced trouble in the SR,” he added.
