Aizawl: Mizoram governor Gen. (retd) Vijay Kumar Singh led the plantation drive by planting a sapling of the state tree, Herhse (Mesua ferrea), at the Lok Bhavan on Green Mizoram Day on Thursday.
Following the governor’s lead, staff members of the governor’s secretariat also planted saplings at the venue.
Speaking on the occasion, the governor commended the state for its annual mass tree plantation drive on Green Mizoram Day. He urged citizens to plant as many saplings as possible throughout the current planting season and not limit their efforts to just Green Mizoram Day.
Highlighting the importance of environmental conservation, the governor noted that Mizoram continues to maintain rich forest cover and healthy ecosystems.
He emphasised that these forests play a crucial role in regulating the climate, purifying the air, and sustaining the water cycle, and called upon the people to actively protect these natural resources in the face of climate change. He further encouraged all participants not to restrict their efforts to mere planting, but to also ensure proper care and maintenance of the saplings so they grow into healthy, mature trees.
Present on the occasion were Vinod P Kavle, secretary to the governor, Lalnunsanga Khawlhring, divisional forest officer, Aizawl Forest Division and other officials.
The Green Mizoram Day was also observed at Youth Recreation Hall in the Falkland locality of Aizawl on Thursday. The event was graced by state environment, forests and climate change minister Lalthansanga with the theme “Trees are green gold, The roots of all life.”
