Aizawl: C Ngunlianchunga, the lone Congress MLA in Mizoram, condemned the killing of Anjel Chakma, an MBA student from Tripura, who was allegedly attacked by a group of people in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
Terming the incident “horrific and deeply disturbing,” Ngunlianchunga said the killing of Chakma, a resident of Nandannagar in West Tripura district, appeared to be a hate crime. He said violence against students and minorities has no place in a civilised society.

“I strongly condemn this heinous crime and urge the authorities concerned to conduct a swift, impartial, and thorough investigation, ensure the strictest punishment for those responsible, and take immediate steps to guarantee the safety and security of students from the northeast across the country,” he said. Expressing condolences, the MLA added, “My heartfelt sympathies go out to the bereaved family. We stand in solidarity with them and demand justice for Anjel Chakma.”
The All India Chakma Students’ Union (AICSU) urged the Uttarakhand govt to transfer the investigation to the CBI and to shift the trial outside the state, preferably to Delhi.
In a statement, AICSU alleged lapses by the Uttarakhand Police, including a three-day delay in registering the FIR despite the incident occurring on Dec 9.
The union claimed Selakui Police Station initially refused to register the complaint, failed to invoke appropriate legal provisions, and that senior police officials attempted to downplay the incident as a “fight” while ignoring allegations of racial abuse.
AICSU also raised concerns over hospital negligence, saying that despite the victim being admitted in critical condition to Graphic Era Hospital, the police were not immediately informed, raising questions about transparency and accountability.
Citing safety concerns, AICSU said the victim’s family members and key eyewitnesses do not feel secure in Uttarakhand, and sought transfer of the trial to ensure a fair judicial process.
Among its demands, AICSU called for a CBI probe into police conduct and hospital negligence, immediate action against erring officials, arrest of the absconding accused, compensation of Rs 2 crore to the victim’s family, and the creation of a special police cell to protect students and residents from the northeast in Uttarakhand.
AICSU said it would pursue the matter through legal and constitutional channels.
