LPG Gas Cylinder Price Hike India Live Updates: Pondicherry University prepone exams, directs students to vacate hostels by May 1 amid LPG shortage

A widening LPG supply disruption across India is exposing the fragile link between global energy routes and domestic livelihoods. The ongoing tensions in West Asia have disrupted shipments near the Strait of Hormuz, delaying supplies and triggering shortages that are now being felt across industries and everyday life.

One of the worst-hit sectors is hospitality. In states like Telangana and Maharashtra, restaurants and hotels are struggling with erratic supply and rising costs of commercial LPG cylinders. Many establishments have reduced menu offerings or temporarily shut down, unable to sustain operations amid both price pressure and supply uncertainty.

The transport sector, particularly autorickshaw drivers, is also grappling with the fallout. In cities such as Bengaluru and Nagpur, drivers are facing long queues at LPG stations, capped refills, and sharply inflated prices. With limited alternatives and rising operational costs, many have been forced to cut down on work or stop operations altogether.

Urban commuters are beginning to feel the indirect effects, as seen in Kolkata where auto operators have sought fare revisions following record-high LPG prices.

Despite government efforts to increase supply allocations, the situation remains uneven. Distribution delays, lack of clear directives to suppliers, and logistical challenges continue to hamper effective relief.

At the heart of the crisis lies a broader issue—India’s dependence on global energy supply chains. As geopolitical tensions persist, the LPG shortage highlights the urgent need for more resilient supply mechanisms to shield critical sectors and vulnerable workers from such external shocks. LPG shortage forces Pondicherry University to prepone exams

Pondicherry University has decided to prepone the examinations from May 6 to April 21 and has directed the students to vacate the hostels by May 1 due to a shortage of LPG, much to the chagrin of the students. In a circular, University registrar R Gunasekaran announced the revised academic calendar for the academic year 2025-26, reducing the number of working days to 79 from 90 “due to administrative reasons.” The summer vacation for all undergraduate/ postgraduate students will commence on May 1. The deans of schools, heads of departments and centres were told to direct the students to vacate the hostel by May 1. The Students Federation of India, Pondicherry University unit (SFI PU), condemned the arbitrary decision of the university to prepone the examinations and to direct the students to vacate the hostel. In a statement, the students’ forum demanded immediate withdrawal of the university’s decision and restoration of the original schedule. The university administration should prioritise students’ academic well-being over administrative convenience and ensure that no student is penalised for circumstances beyond their control, said the statement.

LPG crisis in India: Family’s struggle amid LPG crisis trumps authorities’ all is well claims

The challenges, pain and hassles which Surekha Gaikwad, a professional maid, and her family of 7 have been going through because of LPG cylinder shortage is enough to trump authorities and oil firms claims that things are in control and there is no need to panic.Gaikwad, a resident of Krishnanagar in Mohammadwadi, works in multiple households alongwith her daughter-in-law and daughter. "Around 18 days ago, our only LPG cylinder was over. Since then, our lives have changed and struggle doubled. We booked a new one. However our agency's point of contact, whom we contacted whenever we needed cylinder, refused to answer our phones even after multiple attempts. Finally, right outside our home, we made a ‘chulha' (oven) with some bricks so that we can cook," Gaikwad told TOI.

LPG crisis in India: Limited commercial LPG cylinder supply reaches Pune restaurants, but erratic deliveries keep kitchens under strain

Commercial LPG cylinders have begun reaching some restaurants in the city following recent govt orders allowing additional allocation, offering partial relief to the hospitality sector that is battle shortage of the cooking gas. However, inconsistent and inadequate supply continues to disrupt operations, with restaurateurs saying they are receiving barely a fraction of their requirement. The development follows a state govt communication, based on directions from the Union petroleum ministry, which increased commercial LPG availability by an additional 20% over the earlier restricted supply, subject to priority-based distribution. While the move has initiated some flow of cylinders to eateries, supply remains uneven as essential services continue to be prioritised.

Sama Rammohan Reddy, Chairman of Communication for the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee, on Thursday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for skipping the all-party meeting on the West Asia conflict.

Reddy also accused the Prime Minister of avoiding discussions on the crisis’s impact on LPG supplies, alleging that BJP leaders prioritise winning elections over addressing public concerns.

LPG crisis in India: Rs195 hike takes commercial LPG cylinder cost to Rs 2,255

The public sector undertaking (PSU) oil marketing companies have increased the rates of 19kg commercial LPG cylinders by Rs195, taking it to Rs2,255 per unit. However, despite the higher pricing, availability remains an issue, say sources in the business, including dealers. There is a demand for as much as 40,000 metric tonne LPG in a month in the city. Even as there is no dearth of supply for establishments like hospitals, orphanages and educational institutions, hotels/eateries are only being supplied sparingly, said sources. Even dealers mentioned getting lesser supplies for the commercial buyers. However, sources in the oil marketing companies admit that panic booking by domestic consumers is also one of the reasons for the supply disruption. It has affected the overall supply to all the sectors. Both domestic and commercial LPG cylinders are filled from the common pool.

Bengaluru autos limited to Rs 200 refills, cars Rs 500
A shortage of auto LPG continued to hit autorickshaw drivers in Bengaluru on Wednesday, with long queues at several stations, some stretching over a kilometre. The disruption is not limited to Bengaluru, with drivers across the state facing similar issues.

Several outlets in Bengaluru imposed purchase limits, restricting autorickshaw refills to Rs 200, while cars were allowed up to Rs 500. The shortage sparked protests near RT Nagar on Devegowda Road, where drivers demonstrated demanding adequate supply. Police later intervened to disperse the crowd after parked autorickshaws blocked traffic. Heated arguments between drivers and fuel station operators were also reported at multiple locations.

Ravikumar, an autorickshaw driver, said: "Despite waiting for hours, we are unable to get LPG. At many stations, queues stretch for kilometres. We depend entirely on our autos for our livelihood and have no alternative source of income. How can we pay EMIs and meet daily expenses? Authorities must ensure proper supply of auto LPG."

Drivers also alleged that some retailers were overcharging and collecting money indiscriminately for refills, with little regulatory action. "At govt-run oil companies outlet, LPG costs around Rs 79 per litre, but some private stations are charging between Rs 90 and Rs 120. No action is being taken against this overpricing," another autorickshaw driver said.

LPG crisis in India: Shortage may hit 30% of Telangana’s services sector
A prolonged LPG and fuel shortage could ripple through Telangana’s services economy, with estimates suggesting up to 30% of the tertiary sector may feel the impact if supply disruptions persist. The services sector — which underpins daily economic activity and consumer demand — is especially vulnerable to fuel-linked shocks. As per 2025-26 estimates, real estate, ownership of dwellings and professional services form the largest component of Telangana’s tertiary sector, contributing 34.1%. Early signs of stress are already visible. Several hotels and restaurants have begun downsizing operations, while the transport segment is facing disruptions. Experts warn that this could have a direct bearing on VAT and GST collections, with the impact likely to become clearer in the coming months.

LPG crisis in India: Business LPG price hiked 3rd time in a month; to hit industries & eateries
Price of commercial LPG cylinders rose by over 10% on Wednesday to Rs 2,078 in Delhi, compared to Rs 1,883, reflecting the surge in global gas prices amid the ongoing military conflict in energy-rich West Asia. The 19kg LPG cylinder is largely used by industries and eateries. Domestic consumers, who use 14.2kg cylinders, won’t see a hike. For commercial LPG, this is the third increase in the past month — it was Rs 1,768.5 on March 1. The ministry said that, at current prices, oil marketing companies (OMC) were incurring an under-recovery of Rs 380 per cylinder, and cumulative losses by end-May were estimated at around Rs 40,484cr. Of Rs 60,000cr losses incurred in 2024-25, Rs 30,000cr were absorbed by oil PSUs and Rs 30,000cr by Centre to insulate consumers from high international LPG prices. Officials said the OMCs were also incurring under-recoveries of Rs 24.4 per litre on petrol and Rs 104.99 per litre on diesel at the retail level.

Auto LPG prices hit Rs150/L; pump closures deepen livelihood crisis
Autorickshaw drivers in Nagpur are facing a deepening livelihood crisis as LPG prices have nearly tripled and supply disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict have led to prolonged pump closures. Drivers said LPG rates, which hovered around Rs 56 per litre before March, have shot up to nearly Rs 150, sharply eroding their daily earnings. The spike, coupled with an acute shortage, has disrupted operations, forcing many to keep their vehicles off the road. "Petrol is already expensive, and we cannot sustain operations on it. T'gana govt directs private auto LPG companies to boost supply through all channels
Telangana’s Civil Supplies Commissioner, M Stephen Raveendra, has instructed private auto LPG marketing firms to urgently procure and import LPG through all available channels to address shortages affecting autorickshaws, particularly in Hyderabad. While domestic LPG supplies remain stable, the auto LPG segment has seen a 35% decline, raising concerns for drivers’ livelihoods.

At a review meeting with private operators, who control 80% of the market through 110 outlets, the Commissioner assessed supply conditions before and after the disruption. He emphasised the need for immediate corrective action, especially in Hyderabad, and warned of strict measures against non-compliance.

The government remains focused on maintaining fuel availability to avoid disruption to public transport. Meanwhile, Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy has urged the Centre to provide additional supplies, highlighting a daily shortfall of around 55 metric tonnes affecting nearly 100,000 LPG-run autorickshaws statewide.

LPG Crisis in India Live Updates: Maharashtra speeds up city gas network expansion amid energy supply concerns
The Government of Maharashtra has ordered the fast-tracking of City Gas Distribution (CGD) network expansion across the state, following directions from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas amid global energy supply concerns.

CGD networks supply Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) through underground pipelines to households and industries. The move comes as geopolitical disruptions have strained fuel supply chains and reduced LPG availability.

To accelerate expansion, the state has simplified approval processes. Pending permissions for pipeline work will be treated as “deemed approved”, while new clearances must be granted within 24 hours. Charges for road restoration and permits have been waived, with companies allowed to restore infrastructure at their own cost.

Restrictions on working hours have also been relaxed, enabling round-the-clock construction. Additionally, no-objection certificates from fire and traffic departments will not be required.

The order, effective until 30 June 2026, aims to rapidly boost gas access and ease pressure on conventional fuels.

LPG Crisis in India Live Updates: Long queues of vehicles at LPG stations in Karnataka trigger fears of fuel scarcity
Autorickshaws and LPG-powered cars queued outside fuel stations across parts of Karnataka on Wednesday amid supply shortages, disrupting daily earnings for drivers. The state government clarified that the issue was limited to outlets run by private oil firms, while supplies at public sector companies remained stable.

Drivers reported long waits and empty stations. Abdul Kareem said he spent hours searching for fuel, while Mateen described a sharp drop in income, adding that loan repayments and household expenses were becoming difficult to manage. In several cities, including Mysuru and Chitradurga, stations shut operations due to lack of supply, while protests were reported in Ballari.

Drivers also complained of price hikes, with LPG reportedly rising by Rs 10 per litre at some private outlets. Union representatives alleged that private companies were either restricting supply or charging higher rates. State minister K H Muniyappa acknowledged the issue and urged the Centre to take action against erring private firms.

LPG Crisis in India Live Updates: Maharashtra revises kerosene commission, transport rates amid LPG shortage
The government of Maharashtra on Wednesday revised commission and transport rates for kerosene distribution under the Public Distribution System (PDS), citing LPG shortages linked to the West Asia conflict.

According to official orders, kerosene supply had been limited in recent years due to wider LPG availability and court restrictions. However, with current shortages, the Centre has allocated 3,744 kilolitres of kerosene to the state as an alternative fuel.

To ensure smooth distribution, transport costs have been increased by 40 per cent (excluding diesel), while wholesalers will receive an additional 0.25 per cent allowance to cover handling losses. District authorities will revise transport rates annually based on diesel prices.

Dealer commissions have also been doubled from Rs 675 to Rs 1,350 per kilolitre. The revised rates took effect from 1 April 2026.

LPG Crisis in India Live Updates: ATF hike for domestic airlines limited to 8.5%; commercial LPG, premium petrol prices rise
Prices of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) for domestic airlines were raised by a calibrated 8.5 per cent on Wednesday, even as global oil prices surged sharply due to the ongoing West Asia conflict. The increase was moderated to avoid passing on the full impact, which could have otherwise more than doubled rates.

ATF for domestic carriers rose by over ?8,000 per kilolitre, while foreign and non-scheduled operators saw a much steeper hike of over 114 per cent, reflecting full market-linked pricing. Officials said only a partial increase on the base price had been passed on to domestic airlines to keep operational costs manageable and prevent a sharp rise in airfares.

Alongside, commercial LPG prices were raised by ?195.50 per 19-kg cylinder, driven by rising global benchmarks. However, domestic cooking gas prices remain unchanged despite mounting losses for oil marketing companies. Premium petrol and diesel variants also saw price increases, while regular fuel rates continue to be steady.

The government attributed the surge to disruptions in global energy supply, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for oil shipments.

Officials described the move as a “calibrated approach” aimed at balancing global price pressures with domestic stability. The partial hike is expected to shield passengers from steep fare increases while ensuring the aviation sector remains stable amid rising fuel costs, which account for a significant share of airline expenses.

In a recent address during Mann Ki Baat, Modi described the situation as “challenging” and urged unity, warning against rumour-mongering and politicisation. He stressed collective responsibility in overcoming the crisis.

Earlier meetings have assessed disruptions caused by the conflict, particularly to global energy supply chains. The situation has been aggravated by tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of the world’s energy passes.

The prime minister has also engaged with several global leaders, including Donald Trump, to discuss the evolving crisis and its wider implications.

LPG Crisis in India Live Updates: Oppn playing politics on West Asia crisis, alleges Rijiju amid heated exchanges with LoP Kharge
The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday saw heated exchanges between Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, amid tensions over the West Asia crisis. Kharge questioned the government’s refusal to hold a dedicated discussion in Parliament and criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not attending the all-party meeting on the issue.

Rijiju strongly countered, accusing the opposition of politicising a sensitive matter and failing to act responsibly. He also alleged that opposition leaders had skipped the all-party meeting. Kharge condemned these remarks and demanded they be withdrawn, stating, "Should we attend to listen to your lecture? What authority do you have? You are all dummy ministers. You don't have power. I condemn such a statement."

Rijiju responded by questioning Kharge’s conduct, saying, "He does not uphold the dignity of his position. He himself gives irresponsible statements. Their Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha also is like that ..."

The dispute unfolded as the House prepared to take up key legislative business, including the CAPF Bill and amendments to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. The Chairman announced extended proceedings to complete the agenda.

Kharge accused the government of forcing legislation without accommodating opposition demands, saying global fuel price concerns warranted urgent debate. He remarked, "Whatever we suggest, they disagree. And, whatever they want, they put (in the agenda) and declare forcibly with a voice vote. What is this? Is it democracy?"

Rijiju defended the government, insisting discussions had been held and statements made in Parliament. He said, "There is a problem here. They want to speak what they want, but they don't want to listen. It is just the opposite happening here. They accuse us but don't listen to the government here."

He further criticised the opposition, stating, "Is this an issue to play politics on. There is a crisis in our neighbourhood from where petrol and gas are supplied. The war is not happening because of us. In such a crisis, the opposition is playing politics. It is so unfortunate. This is time for the entire country to stand united. This is not the time for playing politics," while maintaining that the government had taken steps to manage fuel prices and ensure supply stability.

Protesters in Phulwarisharif alleged frequent delivery delays, lack of clarity from agency officials, and routine mismanagement in LPG distribution. India is facing a growing LPG crisis driven by global disruptions linked to the Iran-Israel conflict, with ripple effects being felt across multiple sectors. The situation has been exacerbated by supply bottlenecks near the Strait of Hormuz, where several Indian vessels carrying LPG are stranded, delaying imports and tightening domestic availability.

The shortage has significantly impacted the hospitality industry, particularly in Telangana, where over 50% of commercial LPG supply has been disrupted. Hotels, restaurants, and eateries have been forced to scale down operations or shut down entirely. The crisis has also triggered a labour fallout, with thousands of migrant workers returning to their home states due to shrinking job opportunities.

In several cities, the strain is visible at the consumer level. Autorickshaw drivers in Bengaluru and Nagpur are facing severe difficulties due to fuel shortages and rising LPG prices. Long queues, restricted refills, and allegations of overpricing have added to their woes, pushing many drivers to the brink of financial distress. Similar pressure is being reported in Kolkata, where auto operators have demanded fare hikes or increased passenger limits following a sharp rise in LPG prices.

Meanwhile, commercial LPG prices have surged sharply, rising to over Rs 2,000 per cylinder in Delhi after multiple hikes within a month. The increase reflects global price trends, including a steep jump in the Saudi Contract Price. Although domestic LPG prices remain unchanged, industries and eateries are bearing the brunt of the cost escalation.

Government measures, including increased allocation of commercial LPG in Maharashtra and other regions, have provided only partial relief. Ground-level supply remains inconsistent, with many establishments receiving only a fraction of their required stock.

As the crisis deepens, stakeholders across sectors—from transport workers to hospitality businesses—are calling for urgent intervention to stabilise supply chains, regulate prices, and mitigate the economic impact of the ongoing disruption.
