Kunki grateful for support despite loss

Guwahati: AJP candidate Kunki Chowdhury, youngest in the fray, though faced a defeat at the hands of her rival candidate Vijay Kumar Gupta (70), a senior BJP worker, expressed gratitude to the people of her constituency for the support extended to her even though she was “new to politics” and “got less than a month” to connect with people.


Gupta, for whom Union home minister Amit Shah had to come to the streets to hold a rally, defeated Kunki in the Guwahati Central constituency by a huge margin of over 60,000 votes. The electoral battle in the constituency remained the most animated theatre of the campaign, with the contest dominated throughout by a charged narrative around Assamese-speaking versus Hindi-speaking identity.


After facing defeat, Kunki, in a video message posted on her official social media handles, said, “I am very new to politics. I got less than a month to meet the people in the constituency and have been able to convince the people to a great extent. I am overwhelmed by the kind of support I have received. I would like to assure the people that I will always stand by the people for their interest. I will raise my voice for a solution to the problems of the constituency.”


Meanwhile, Gupta, while thanking the people of the constituency for the mandate, said he will work for betterment of the constituency in every possible way, including solving the existing issues.
