Guwahati: The city got its 31st flyover on Friday, after CM
Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the flyover named after Syama Prasad Mookerjee, marking the first major infrastructure inauguration after his state election victory.
“This flyover will drastically reduce travel time for patients travelling from B Barooah Cancer Hospital and Pragjyotishpur Medical College to NH 27, while also decongesting one of Guwahati’s most densely populated areas,” Sarma said.
He added that the flyover will make movement smoother for people travelling to the Barasapara and Bhetkuchi areas of the city. “The service road under the flyover is six metres wide, with two-metre-wide RCC drains, which will make the Guwahati–Garbhanga road well connected and smooth,” he added.
During the ceremony, he said two additional lanes would be built joining the flyover to a 320-metre lane towards the Barasapara Cricket Stadium and a 330-metre lane towards the Cycle Factory area.
Highlighting the importance of the flyover’s name, Sarma said Mookerjee is often remembered as one of the key figures who opposed the Muslim League’s alleged plan during the 1947 partition period to include the whole of Bengal, including Kolkata and the entire northeast, within East Pakistan. “If they were successful, there would not be Assam in India today,” he added.
