GURGAON: Police are looking for a 25-year-old woman after she allegedly ploughed her SUV into a scooterette at Sector 50 on Thursday evening, leading to the death of a 52-year-old woman.
The SUV driver's name, according to the FIR, is Amira and she lives in The World Spa. She has been booked for rash driving, causing death by negligence and various other sections of the IPC. Police said she took the victims,
Maya Devi, who succumbed to her injuries, and her son Gagan , to hospital but slipped out of there and has been missing since.
With Gagan recovering in ICU and Amira missing, police cannot precisely say how the accident happened or what the exact sequence of events was on Thursday evening. But from preliminary investigations and accounts of eyewitnesses, this is what they have inferred. The accident happened around 6.30pm near Hilton Hotel in Sector 50. Maya Devi was riding pillion with her son driving the scooterette (they were returning from her daughter's house in Sector 57). Near the Hilton, Gagan slowed down at a speed breaker. They had barely crossed the speed breaker when a Mahindra XUV, driven by Amira, came at speed from behind, hit the bump, jumped and rammed the scooterette.
With passersby gathering to stop the XUV, Amira offered to rush the injured mother-son duo to Artemis Hospital, police said. But after admitting them there, she managed to give everyone the slip. Maya Devi succumbed to her injuries while being given emergency treatment. Gagan is reportedly out of danger now.
"I was returning on my bicycle when I heard a collision. Looking back, I saw the injured duo sprawled on the road with their scooterette under the SUV. Several other passersby rushed in and stopped the car from fleeing. She then agreed to carry the injured to hospital in her car. The SUV driver may have accidentally pressed the accelerator while trying to apply the brakes," an eyewitness told police.
The FIR has been filed under sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 304 A (causing death by negligence) and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the IPC.
"Following the car registration, we found the owner to live in a flat in tower B-6 of The World Spa in Sector 30. When we reached the flat, it was locked," said ASI Susheel Kumar, the investigating officer.
Maya Devi is the wife of inspector Jai Singh, the in-charge of police's security wing in Gurgaon. "I join the entire police department to condole the death of inspector Jai Singh's wife. We shall find the culprit soon and see that justice is delivered," said Gurgaon police commissioner Navdeep Singh Virk.
