Will smoothen Calangute-Saligao road in one week, says MLA
Calangute: The Calangute-Saligao Chogm road stretch, which has remained in varying states of disrepair for over a year, will be fully restored within the next week once all digging-related works are completed, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said.
On Friday, Lobo, along with PWD officials, Calangute sarpanch Joseph Sequeira and others, conducted an inspection of the road stretch near the Shivaji statue junction to review the progress of restoration works.
“The people of Calangute and tourists have had to face a lot of inconvenience over the past few months because of road-digging and for that, I want to apologise. By the middle of next week, hotmixing of the road will be completed and it will be smooth for traffic,” he said.
The road was repeatedly dug up for the laying of electricity cables and water pipelines, with frequent delays angering commuters, who held multiple protests after being left frustrated for months due to poor road conditions causing difficulties.
“We have completed all the underground electricity cabling and water pipeline work. From the Saligao power house substation on the Saligao-Calangute plateau, underground cables have been laid to the Calangute substation and the Nagoa substation. Also, water pipelines have been laid to bring raw water to the new water treatment plant at Calangute and the sump at Umta Vaddo (Calangute beach),” he said.
However, road-digging will be ongoing on many of Calangute’s internal roads to repair sewage chambers.
