Mopa locals call for protection of sacred grove near airport
Keri: Locals of villages from the Pernem taluka have demanded that steps be taken on priority to protect the sacred grove of Barazan, bordering Manohar International Airport, Mopa.
The locals said they fear the fast-paced development of the airport will slowly affect the sacred grove.
During a recent visit, Anuradha Upadhye, a researcher from Pune, discovered floral wealth at the grove, including zingiber and cheilocostus, distinct genera of rhizomatous plants. Keystone species of ficus microcarpa (nandruk) were also spotted at the site.
“Locals have good knowledge about these woods. Entry close to the worship square is barred and women are allowed to make offerings but from a distance and barefoot,” Upadhye said. The researcher also found distinct tree species such as ‘kajara’ (strychnos nux-vomica) nandruk, kate sawar (bombax ceiba), argyreia nervosa, inside the grove.
Upadhye said the grove needs to be restored, and entry should be restricted so that it is protected. “The flora may get affected by the adjoining airport and traffic. Micro drops of fuel will likely impact the growth of the vegetation,” she said.
She added that only strong cultural practice, awareness and protection may help the grove to survive.
The locals believe that the sacred grove received protection from the guardian spirit, Barazan. “Every year, during Holi, a trunk of arecanut tree is installed by offering coconuts,” said Vishram Kambli, a local from Varkhand.
Kambli said they protected the Barazanachi rai for generations, but now govt should step in as it is located close to the airport.
