Panaji: Chimbel villagers have requested residents of nearby villages to join the protest at the maha sabha on Jan 4. The residents sat on a hunger strike for seven days, protesting the construction of Unity Mall and a 17-storey Prashaasan Stambh.
On Friday, the district court reiterated the stay order on the construction of the mall, given earlier on Dec 6, and instructed the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) to maintain status quo after residents alleged that the GTDC was constructing the mall despite the stay order.

Govind Shirodkar, president of the Gakuved Federation, said, “We will continue the fight to resist this project. We will also be successful in getting this project scrapped.”
A Chimbel resident said, “We are on a hunger strike for seven days. We did not see our MLA visit our booth and talk to the residents. This is a clear example of self-interest.”
