New Delhi: Six days after being shot in the head during a heated altercation at an eatery in southeast Delhi’s Amar Colony, 17-year-old
Sai Kumar died on Monday, bringing a tragic end to a week-long battle for survival.
Police have arrested two adult associates of the juvenile accused on Monday. The two were accompanying the minor at the time of the shooting.
“We lost him this morning,” his father,
Sunil Kumar, told TOI, his voice breaking.
Kumar had a bullet lodged in his brain and remained in a coma from the day of the incident. Doctors said that attempting to remove the bullet would be too risky. He was declared dead around 11.45 am on Monday.
Outside the mortuary at AIIMS Trauma Centre on Monday, grieving relatives and friends gathered. “He fought very hard for almost a week,” a family member said.
As they mourned the loss of the Class XII student, relatives remembered a cheerful teenager who enjoyed cricket, travelling and mathematics. “He would often play cricket with me and his father,” said his uncle, Anil. Cricket, the family said, was a passion he inherited from his father.
Until five years ago, Sai lived in a joint family and shared a close bond with relatives, particularly his grandfather.
Anil recalled a family trip to Jaipur last winter, which he described as one of the teenager’s happiest memories. “He loved travelling and was always excited about seeing new places with us,” he said. Family members added that Sai was fond of mathematics and often spoke about his plans and ambitions.
According to investigators, a manhunt is on to identify and arrest the person who allegedly supplied the firearm and owned the motorcycle used in the attack. Police said sections related to murder will be added to the case.
While the juvenile accused had been apprehended earlier, the family has sought clarity on the investigation and demanded verification of his age. Police said they would approach the Juvenile Justice Board, seeking permission to try him as an adult.
Family members said the teenager was allegedly assaulted and shot after he objected to a group of boys reportedly making comments and staring at a female friend who was with him.
