NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police havearrested four persons who were allegedly betting on the ongoing cricket matchbetween India and Australia in Sydney. Deputy Commissioner of police (specialcell) Ashok Chand said that the accused had put about Rs 5 crore atstake.
The accused, Manoj Jain, Ajay Kumar, Deeraj Kochhar and RahulVohra were apprehended from a flat in Tilak Nagar on Friday. Two laptops, fourmobile phones, 20 phone instruments, notebook, calculator and a colourtelevision were seized from the flat.
During the investigation thepolice learnt that Jain, Kumar and Vohra have been caught in the past whileputting stakes during cricket matches. ‘‘Since the police werealready aware of their activities, they had changed their base from Delhi toGurgaon and Faridabad,’’ said a police officer.
Theyrecently moved back to Delhi. The accused have reportedly claimed closeassociation with major betting syndicates of Mumbai which also operateinternationally.
According to the accused, they used to get calls from thepunters on the mobile phones for the deals.
The police claimed thatthe accused used technology to run the betting racket. Instead of maintainingthe traditional registers, they kept a record of the stakes and punters on aspecially designed software.
