Citizens oppose renaming of Landour, 17 objections filed
Mussoorie: The proposal to rename Landour Cantonment as Ramgir has drawn sharp resistance from residents, business groups and political leaders, with 17 objections submitted to cantonment authorities. Opponents include the Mussoorie Hotels Association, Mussoorie Traders Association, local residents, and former Mussoorie Municipal Council (MMC) chairman.
“Landour is the identity of this place, and we strongly oppose changing its name,” said one resident.
Former cantonment vice president Badal Prakash added, “The name Landour is not British—it is Indian. We have provided documents proving its origin.”
Critics argue the proposed name has no link to Landour or Mussoorie. “Why was this name suggested? It has no connection here,” said Anuj Gupta, former MMC chairman.
Cantonment CEO Ankita Singh confirmed receiving 17 objections, which have been forwarded to higher authorities.
The proposal was first published in April, citing defence ministry guidelines on renaming colonial-era places. Objections from residents were sought within seven days.
A similar renaming proposal has also been initiated for Lansdowne Cantonment.
