2 held for fake rape claim video in Champawat
Pithoragarh: A day after Champawat police debunked a gangrape claim, two individuals were arrested on Friday for circulating a video of a minor girl on social media and allegedly conspiring to frame innocent people in false cases. A third suspect remains at large.
The arrests followed a complaint by Ram Singh Rawat. Police have booked three suspects -- Kamal Singh Rawat, Arjita Rai and Anand Singh Mehara. Kamal Singh and Arjita Rai have been arrested and remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody, while Anand Singh is currently evading arrest.
The FIR was registered at Champawat police station under BNS sections 127, 217, 331, and 351, alongside Sections 22/23 of the Pocso Act.
Champawat SP Rekha Yadav stated that the group allegedly held the minor girl hostage to film the video, which was then circulated online. Investigative leads suggest the entire incident was staged as a result of political rivalry between two village factions.
“Revealing the identity of a minor is a punishable offense. This activity not only violates the law but causes irreparable harm to the girl’s social standing. We are currently working to have the video removed from all platforms,” said Yadav.
