COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore city police are taking various steps to ensure safe New Year celebrations on Wednesday night. They have instructed event organisers to ensure women safety and advised them to send women safely to their homes after parties.
The city police on Tuesday held a meeting with event organisers regarding the measures to be followed during New Year eve celebrations. The police instructed them to take necessary measures to maintain law and order. They should deploy adequate security guards and ensure parking facilities. They should alert police if they find any suspicious movement. The event organisers should take steps to prevent drunk driving. They should arrange vehicle facilities for their customers to reach home. Event organisers should check the functioning of CCTVs. They should hand over the footage whenever police demand it.
Private bars have been advised to send their customers to their homes safely after parties. They should not allow their drunk customers to drive their vehicles. The bars have been instructed to close before 1am on Thursday.
City police commissioner A Saravana Sundar said, “Event organisers have been instructed to deploy adequate security guards to regulate vehicular traffic to hotels, shopping malls, lodges and indoor venues and to ensure the safety of participants and their belongings.”
Law and order police have identified 35 locations monitoring traffic, preventing accidents and regulating traffic. Similarly, 35 locations have been identified by the traffic police where they will conduct vehicle checks. Ambulances will be stationed at Anna statue on the Avinashi Road, Codissia junction, near the Head Post Office on D B Road in R S Puram and the Ukkadam-Aathupalam junction.
The flyovers in the city -- except North Coimbatore, Uppilipalayam, Sathy Road and Avarampalayam flyovers -- will be closed for motorists from 9pm on Wednesday.
A total of 1,600 police personnel will be deployed on Wednesday evening. Police requested the public to cooperate with them during celebrations.
