Coimbatore: Public have come out against a private apartment at Urumandampalayam for releasing treated wastewater onto the road, causing them inconvenience.According to various sources, the apartment in ward 13 is discharging treated water onto the road every night. A resident from the area said the apartment should either release the treated wastewater into a drain or connect it to their sewer system. "The water flows on the road for almost a kilometre, where there is a private school. This also causes water stagnation on the road. This is one of the reasons why the road is getting damaged often. Moreover, pedestrians and bikers face difficulties due to this stagnant water." M Devendran, secretary, Coimbatore district road protection committee, said while they had made several representations to the ward councillor and officials concerned to address the issue, no action had been initiated against the apartment management yet. "We strongly condemn the official apathy and demand strict action against the apartment management. On what basis are they permitted to discharge the water outside their premises?" When contacted, corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran assured immediate action. "If the allegations are proved, we will serve a notice on the apartment management and impose a penalty for failing comply with the norms. If there are similar complaints elsewhere in the city, those shall also be addressed."
