Chennai: A 16-year-old boy was swept away by waves while rescuing his younger brother at Marina Beach on Friday evening. Firefighters continued search operations on Saturday.
Police said Sudharsan of Mettu Street in Kovilpathagai in Avadi, who recently completed his Class XI examinations, went to Marina Beach with his brother Kamalesh, 15, mother Devaki, 43, and other family members.
While the siblings were bathing in the sea, Kamalesh was caught in strong waves. On noticing this, Sudharsan rushed to rescue him and managed to pull his brother to safety. However, Sudharsan was dragged into the sea by the waves.
Family members searched for the teenager but could not trace him and they later called Marina police.
Fire and rescue services personnel launched a search operation along the shoreline and in the sea. Police said the search continued on Saturday as the boy remained untraced.
Devaki appealed to chief minister C Joseph Vijay to take steps to trace her son.
