Tamil Nadu assembly polls: CPI to contest 5 seats in DMK-led alliance; one less than 2021

CHENNAI: After three rounds of talks, DMK allocated five seats for CPI in the secular progressive alliance led by DMK in Tamil Nadu. The seat-sharing agreement was signed in the presence of chief minister M K Stalin.

This is one lesser than they contested in 2021 assembly election. In the previous election, CPI contested in six seats and won two.





Though initially CPI demanded seats in double digits from DMK, the Dravidian major asked CPI to "sacrifice a seat" for the sake of accommodating more political parties in the alliance.

After couple of rounds, CPI agreed to DMK's demand and the same was agreed in their executive committee meeting held at their party headquarters in Chennai, on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters after signing the agreement, CPI state secretary M Veerpandian told reporters that their main objective in this election was to defeat BJP.
