Pondy university deputy registrar booked for amassing 54 lakh in 2.5 yrs

Chennai: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Chennai, booked Pondicherry University deputy registrar K Mahesh on charges of amassing wealth to the tune of 54 lakh in two and a half years, disproportionate to his known sources of income.According to the FIR, K Mahesh worked as registrar of Jawaharlal Institute Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) on deputation from Sept 2023 to Feb 2025. CBI took his tenure in JIPMER and a few months before and after his tenure as the check period for the investigation.
While Mahesh and family members were in possession of just 15.9 lakh at the beginning of the period, their assets grew up to 1.32 crore in two years. Their expenditure was to the tune of 29 lakh during this time, while Mahesh's income was 93 lakh. "Investigation reveals that Mahesh, in the capacity of public servant, intentionally enriched himself illicitly during the period of his office. The value of such disproportionate assets is 57.75% of his known sources of income during the said period," said the FIR.CBI also identified five other properties in the name of family members of Mahesh, whose period of acquisition was not known. "It will be looked into in the course of the investigation," said the FIR.
