Chennai: Tamil Nadu state marketing corporation (Tasmac) decided to postpone the implementation of empty liquor bottle buyback scheme in Chennai and a few other districts until the Assembly elections, to allow for the workers' dissent to subside and to ensure that liquor sales are not affected.Chennai and the Tiruvallur East region, where the scheme is yet to be implemented, generate around two lakh bottles every day. Currently, Tasmac bar owners collect the empty bottles and sell them to recycling plants.

Tasmac implemented the scheme in all districts as per the directions of the Madras high court, in which 10 is collected extra over MRP. Once the bottle is returned, they customer gets 10 reimbursed. While the scheme was implemented in about 22 districts, Chennai and parts of Tiruvallur, Salem and Virudhunagar are some areas that are yet to be covered under the scheme.
