Man held for taking away bag having 26L cash

Chennai: A 40-year-old man has been arrested for taking away a bag containing 26.46 lakh that had fallen on the road from a motorcyclist near Pulianthope.Police said the complainant, Dinesh Kumar, 43, had collected 26.46 lakh from the sale of ice blocks on March 2 and kept the cash bag in the front portion of his two-wheeler while returning home. However, after reaching home he realized that the bag containing the money was missing. He subsequently lodged a complaint with the Otteri police.During investigation, police examined CCTV footage and found that the bag had fallen near Pulianthope police station junction. The footage showed a man picking up the bag and taking it away.The suspect was identified as Ashok, 40.When contacted by police, he said he would surrender the money before a magistrate at Egmore court complex.Ashok surrendered before the court on Saturday evening, but police said the cash had not been handed over. The court remanded him in judicial custody.
