‘I was extremely shocked’: Rajinikanth breaks silence on Vijay becoming Tamil Nadu CM, defends friendship with MK Stalin

CHENNAI: Veteran actor Rajinikanth on Sunday addressed a press conference at his residence in Poes Garden, Chennai, clarifying his political position amid criticism surrounding his recent meeting with MK Stalin.

Rajinikanth said he was “extremely shocked” on hearing about Vijay becoming the chief minister. He added that he is no longer active in politics and has been away from it for several years. Rajinikanth also noted that there is a 28-year age gap between him and Vijay, stating that Vijay has independently earned recognition by standing against the two major political parties.





"I was extremely shocked when I heard that Vijay had become the Chief Minister. I am not in politics; it has been many days since I stepped away from politics. There is a 28-year age difference between Vijay and me. Here, Vijay has independently earned recognition by standing against the two major parties, " Rajinikanth said.

The actor said he decided to hold the press conference because repeated criticism regarding his political stance and his meeting with Stalin could eventually be perceived as truth if left unanswered.

“I am holding this press meet because many criticisms are being made about me in connection with the election. If I do not respond to them, they will become accepted as the truth,” he said.

Rajinikanth also defended his meeting with Stalin after the election results, stating that their relationship transcends politics.

“Our friendship is beyond politics. I felt saddened that MK Stalin was defeated in Kulathur. Rajini is not a cheap or low-standard person to speak unnecessarily about anything else,” he remarked.

Rajinikanth also addressed criticism over his reaction to Vijay becoming Chief Minister. "It was said that I did not congratulate Vijay at the airport. I posted my congratulations on X (formerly Twitter) as soon as he won. I am not in politics. I have already left politics. When I am not in politics, why should I be jealous of him? What is destined for someone will happen, and what is not won't," he said.

Rajinikanth’s remarks come amid intense political discussions in Tamil Nadu following the election results and speculation over the political equations between film personalities and mainstream political parties in the state.
