Chennai water crisis: Carnatic singers come together to please rain gods

CHENNAI: It was raining Amrithavarshini n T Nagar. At a time when Chennai is going through a severe water crisis, Carnatic singers in the city got together in T Nagar on Tuesday to please rain gods with their melodies.


The Global Carnatic Music Association organised a 12-hour marathon -- ‘Megha Raga Varshini’ -- at the Srigeri Saradha Peetam Temple on the Venkatanarayana Road in T Nagar. The programme that started at 9am will go on till 9pm.

Participants in the programme include singers like T N Seshagopalan, Bombay Jayashree, Aruna Sairam, Sikkil Gurucharan, Nithyashree Mahadevan, N Vijay Siva, Carnatica Brothers, Chinmaya sisters, Gayathri Girish, Ranjani and Gayathri, Bombay Sisters, Malladi Brothers, Sudha Raghunathan, Priya Sisters and Neyveli Santhanagopalan.

“Many respectful and senior singers have managed to please rain gods with Amrithavarshini raga. We are just ordinary people, but we believe that if we sing from our hearts it will rain,” said Nithyashree.

Sudha Ragunanathan said, “I have experienced this. It has rained once after I sang in Amrithavarshini raga. This programme is our tribute to nature.”
