Chennai/Kolkata: A faux pas by chief minister M K Stalin, who condemned West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankar’s move to prorogue the assembly from February 12 and said the act “goes against the established norms and convention”, triggered sharp reactions from the WB governor and the
BJP.
In a tweet, governor Dhankar said the “assembly was prorogued at express request” of the WB government.
BJP national general secretary (organsiation) B L Santhosh and several BJP leaders too joined in to criticise Stalin on social media and point out that the governor acted upon the recommendation of the state government.
Hours after the WB governor’s tweet, in an attempt at face saving, Stalin tweeted that his counterpart
Mamata Banerjee telephoned him and shared her concern and “anguish on the constitutional overstepping and brazen misuse of power by the governors of non-BJP ruled states” during their telephonic conservation. The WB CM had suggested a meeting of opposition CMs during their talk over the phone, Stalin said. “I assured her of DMK’s commitment to uphold state autonomy. Convention of opposition CMs will soon happen out of Delhi!”, he tweeted.
On Sunday morning, Stalin tweeted from his official ‘CMOTamilNadu’ handle to say, “The act of #WestBengal Governor to prorogue the WB Assembly Session is without any propriety expected from the exalted post and goes against the established norms and conventions. The ‘symbolic’ head of the state should be the role model to uphold the constitution. Beauty of democracy lies in extending mutual respect to each other”.
Governor Dhankar took to social media to respond to Stalin. “Find it unusually expedient to respectfully invite indulgent attention of TN CM @mkstalin that his extremely harsh hurtful observations are not in the least in conformity with facts- attached order. Assembly was prorogued at express request,” the governor tweeted, attaching a two-page order reasoning his step. The governor also tagged CM Banerjee — for the first time since January 31 when she announced she was blocking the governor from her Twitter handle — and TN governor R N Ravi. Dhankhar used his constitutional powers to discontinue the assembly session without dissolving the assembly.
BJP’s national general secretary (organisation) B L Santhosh came down heavily on the TN CM and tweeted stating that Stalin’s tweet showed “how ill prepared and less informed these dynasts are… Tamilnadu deserves better Governance.”
