Where failure is 1st step to success: Haryana’s ‘stumble lab’ to end rote learning

Kaithal: Haryana education minister Mahipal Dhanda on Wednesday launched a ‘stumble lab' initiative in Kaithal to promote curiosity, confidence and experiential learning among govt school students. The project, conceptualised by deputy commissioner Aparajita, was inaugurated at a govt girls senior secondary school in Pundri.The initiative aims to help students overcome fear of failure and move beyond rote learning through activity-based methods. It encourages independent thinking, mental resilience and creative problem-solving, said an official. The official added the pilot phase has shown encouraging results.Dhanda said such innovations strengthen both academic foundations and overall development. He added a plan would be prepared to expand the project across the state so that more students can benefit.He linked the initiative to the broader goal of strengthening foundational education and urged students to adopt a positive approach towards learning from mistakes.Explaining the concept, Aparajita said the programme focuses on practical exercises such as simple experiments, estimation tasks and activities to improve mental agility. A "curiosity index" will also be introduced to track student engagement.She said the project has been implemented using existing resources, without additional financial burden. The focus will be on participation, with no penalties for wrong answers or rewards for high output, to create a safe learning environment.District education officer Subhash Kumar said teachers have been trained for implementation, and feedback is being collected to refine the programme.
