Punjab reports 74 farm fires, most cases from Ferozepur
Bathinda: Punjab on Tuesday reported 74 farm fire cases, taking the count to 8,295. Earlier, Punjab reported 1,447 crop residue burning cases on May 8, which was its highest tally in the ongoing wheat harvesting season. Ferozepur turned out to be the worst-affected district with a maximum of 792 crop residue burning cases till May 12, followed by 692 in Bathinda, 683 in Tarn Taran, 647 in Amritsar, 645 in Sangrur, 642 in Moga, 568 in Gurdaspur, 491 in Ludhiana, 445 in Muktsar, 371 in Fazilka, 345 in Patiala, 338 in Barnala, 319 in Mansa, 316 in Faridkot, 226 in Jalandhar, 212 in Kapurthala, 200 in Hoshiarpur and 144 in Malerkotla. Legal action is continuing, which includes registration of FIRs, marking red entries in land records and imposing environmental compensation against the farmers. Haryana reported five farm fires in the day, while Madhya Pradesh reported 225 and Uttar Pradesh 69. The total farm fire cases in the season so far were reported at 62,411, and out of it, 35,967 burning cases were reported from Madhya Pradesh, which turns out to be 57.6% of the total burning cases so far in the wheat harvesting season. The maximum 4,221 burning cases were reported from Videsha district of Madhya Pradesh as 96 districts of MP, UP, Punjab and Haryana reported over 100 burning cases each till May 12. Earlier, during the paddy harvesting in the 2025 kharif season, Madhya Pradesh remained at the top in stubble burning followed by Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Out of these 443 FIRs, the maximum 82 FIRs have been filed in Moga district followed by 71 FIRs in Sangrur, 59 FIRs in Patiala, 56 in Mansa, 51 in Fazilka, 38 in Barnala, 36 in Kapurthala, 15 in Gurdaspur, 13 in Faridkot, 12 in Bathinda, four in Jalandhar, three in Muktsar, two in Pathankot and one in Ludhiana.665 red entries have been made in land records, with 34 in a day on May 11. Rs 67.90 lakh environmental compensation has been imposed in 1,382 cases of farm fire in the state, with Rs 7.15 lakh in the day. Out of the total environmental compensation, Rs 365,000 has been realised. Warning/show-cause notices have been issued to 125 nodal/supervisory officers, with 19 notices in a day.
