Modi, Saini works worked for me: Sham Bansal

Panchkula: Fresh from a landslide victory in the mayoral polls, Sham Lal Bansal credited the BJP leadership for the win while blaming Congress’s “internal factionalism” for its poor showing. In an interaction with TOI, the newly elected mayor said sustained grassroots connect and development plank worked in his favour.

Did you expect such a win?

Yes. I was confident from day one. I have been among people since the Jan Sangh days in 1970 and later with the BJP. I understand public expectations from a leader.

What led to the huge victory?

The development works carried out under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Nayab Singh Saini played a major role. Personally, my involvement in religious, social and charitable activities also helped build connect with voters.

This is your first electoral win after three assembly defeats.

Those were different times. After 2014, the political mood changed. People are now more aware and can see the scale of development across the country.

Why did Cong manage just one seat?

They are divided into multiple factions. Their senior leaders — Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Randeep Surjewala and Kumari Selja — did not effectively campaign here. There is a lack of cohesion. In contrast, we held extensive rallies, jan sabhas and meetings.

Your response to allegations of EVM tampering and irregularities?

The problem lies in Congress’s factional mindset, not in EVMs. Even if CCTV cameras were briefly non-functional, EVMs cannot be accessed once sealed and signed by polling agents and officials.

What can residents expect now?

As promised, priority will be given to resolving waterlogging, sewerage issues, road repairs and park maintenance within 100 days. In the longer run, projects like housing for slum residents and beautification of Mata Mansa Devi Temple and surrounding areas will be taken up.
