‘Mere apologies won’t work’: Haryana women panel chief warns of strict action

Hisar: Haryana State Women's Commission chairperson Renu Bhatia on Tuesday said mere apologies will no longer be accepted in cases involving obscene or derogatory content against women, stressing that strict legal action must follow. Interacting with the mediapersons during her visit to Hisar as the chief guest at the Nari Shakti Vandan Sankalp Yatra, organised to mark the implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Act by the Centre, she said the padyatra, which saw participation from a large number of women, was presided over by BJP district president Dr Asha Khedar. She said the commission has written to the chief minister seeking the creation of a separate department or appointment of a nodal officer to monitor objectionable songs, reels and social media content. Bhatia highlighted that several songs and short videos circulating online undermine the dignity of women and negatively impact society. "There is a need for a system that can immediately take cognisance and initiate action against such content," she said. Referring to incidents involving controversial lyrics, including those linked to singer Badshah, she noted that offenders often issue apologies and escape consequences — a trend the Commission aims to end. She also mentioned a recent case involving singer Masoom Sharma, stating that police action has already been initiated and he has been summoned for questioning.
