MC begins recarpeting of encroached V-5 road in Sector 45
Chandigarh: The municipal corporation’s engineering department has begun recarpeting the V-5 road in Sector 45-A and B, under ward 34, after clearing long-standing encroachments that had narrowed the stretch significantly.
Officials said the 40ft-wide road had shrunk to about 15–20 ft due to encroachments, causing inconvenience to residents as well as students and staff of Dev Samaj College who frequently use the route.
Area councillor Gurpreet Singh said all illegal encroachments and debris were removed before starting the work. “Once completed, the road will ensure smoother movement and improve the overall condition of the area,” he said.
The road is being laid with a 40mm bitumen layer to enhance strength and durability, while helping address recurring waterlogging issues. Officials said construction will follow prescribed technical and quality norms. The stretch will remain closed during the work, and commuters have been advised to bear temporary inconvenience.
Responding to concerns about re-encroachment, Singh said strict action, including FIRs, would be taken against violators. He also flagged persistent roadside parking of vegetable-laden tempos, carts and autorickshaws by some from nearby Burail village, which leads to congestion and hampers sanitation work.
He urged residents to help keep the area encroachment-free and maintain cleanliness.
