Jalandhar: Police here on Wednesday arrested a man after a shootout in connection with an attempt on the life of Bute Dia Chhana sarpanch and Jamhoori Kisan Sabha leader Mohinder Singh on Feb 28.
He was attacked by five persons armed with kirpans and iron rods, causing serious injuries. Villagers and the Kisan Sabha alleged that he was attacked because he spoke out against peddlers. SSP Harvinder Singh Virk said all five accused were later identified. He said that on Wednesday, one of the accused, Sukhjit Singh alias Shilu, was moving suspiciously in Mehatpur, and a special naka was established on the Mehatpur–Nakodar poad by a team from Mehatpur police station.

He said at the naka, the suspect was signalled to stop, but he allegedly opened fire at the police. He was shot in the leg when police retaliated. He is being treated at the local civil hospital.
