'Won't Make Same Mistakes With India': Rubio's Deputy Landau Sparks Debate On US Strategy On Ties

A comment from US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau has sparked questions about whether Washington sees India as an economic competitor. But US policy expert Bonnie Glick says the bigger picture tells a different story. According to Glick, the United States made a historic gamble when it allowed China to integrate into the global economic system through the World Trade Organisation — a decision many American policymakers now consider a mistake. India, however, is fundamentally different. As the world’s largest democracy and a key strategic partner, India’s relationship with the United States goes far beyond economics. Glick says trade tensions and tariff disputes may continue, and Washington may impose tariffs on several countries including India. But she does not see the two nations entering a trade war. Instead, the India-US relationship is driven by deeper factors such as democratic values, global security cooperation, and shared geopolitical interests. The debate now highlights the evolving balance between competition and partnership in one of the world’s most important bilateral relationships.
