Jalandhar: Richi Kaypee, the 36-year-old son of former Lok Sabha MP from Jalandhar Mohinder Singh Kaypee, was killed in an accident after his car collided with two other cars in the Model Town area of the city Saturday night.
The accident occurred around 10:55 pm, and Richi soon succumbed to his injuries.
When the passersby and the residents of the area rushed towards Richi's car, he gave them his phone and asked to call his family. The former MP lives near the site of the mishap.
Injured Richi was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors advised to shift him to another hospital. He was declared dead by the doctors at the referred hospital.
Punjabi singer Rai Jujhar, a family friend who was present at Kaypee's house before the accident, said the doctors told them that Richi had suffered a serious injury to his spinal cord, which proved fatal.
CCTV footage of the accident revealed that the Fortuner vehicle driven by Richi collided with a Creta and almost took a 180-degree turn. A Grand Vitara vehicle was also involved in the accident.
While the driver of the Creta fled the scene, a couple in the Grand Vitara also sustained injuries.
The police, however, traced the owner of the Creta, who is a local businessman. When police officials reached his home, they found that he had left with his family and the vehicle.
As the word about Mohinder Singh Kaypee's loss spread in the city, leaders from across the political spectrum and hundreds of Kaypee's friends and supporters visited the house on Sunday. Last year, Mohinder Singh Kaypee lost his wife.
Kaypee served as the Punjab Congress president, but ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he joined the Shiromani Akali Dal and was the party candidate from Jalandhar.
