Amritsar: Objecting to the Centre's move to end Punjab's permanent membership in the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami on Wednesday termed it another injustice against the state.
In a statement, Dhami alleged that the Govt of India has been consistently ignoring the rights and interests of Punjab and the Sikh community. He cited issues such as river water sharing, Chandigarh's status, Punjabi-speaking areas, and concerns related to agriculture and the economy.
He further alleged that the Centre was attempting to divert Punjab's river waters to other states by altering rules, despite the state having the first claim over them.
Calling the move a direct attack on Punjab's rights, Dhami said a stable system had been in place since the formation of the BBMB in 1974, but the Centre was now seeking to change rules to make appointments at its discretion.
He urged the Centre to withdraw the decision and refrain from implementing measures that undermine Punjab's rights.
