Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday struck a note of regional affinity moments after Suvendu Adhikari was announced as Bengal CM, stating that Odisha and Bengal “are not much different” as he asserted that BJP’s victory in the neighbouring state would usher in “a new dawn” and stronger ties between the two.
Majhi, who was in Kolkata as the party’s co-observer for selecting the BJP legislature party leader in Bengal, elaborated on the two states’ cultural connection and said, “The people of Odisha regard Kolkata as their second home while residents of both the states share a deep-rooted devotion to Lord Jagannath. The bond between the two states goes beyond geography, reflecting a shared spiritual and emotional connection. With the blessings of Mahaprabhu
Jagannath, love between the people of Odisha and Bengal will grow even stronger.”
Addressing party workers, Majhi credited BJP cadres for the victory, describing it as a collective achievement of those “who love Bengal and Bharat”. He invoked the legacy of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, calling him an ideological inspiration rooted in Bengal’s political history.
Congratulating Adhikari “on my behalf and on behalf of Odisha,” Majhi expressed gratitude to party leaders and workers, saying their efforts drove the party’s growth from almost no show in 2011 to a dominant position now. He termed the journey a “milestone” and attributed the success to the blessings of Lord Jagannath and Maa Kali. He praised Bengal BJP workers for consistently strengthening the party’s base.
Describing the mandate as historic, Majhi said Bengal entered a new political phase after decades. “After prolonged struggle, the people have given us the opportunity to move forward. A new chapter will be written in Bengal’s political history,” he added.
Majhi also highlighted his role in the leadership selection process, saying he was honoured to serve as co-observer alongside Union home minister Amit Shah. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Nitin Nabin and Shah for entrusting him with the responsibility.
He said the mandate reflected people’s rejection of “injustice and corruption” and their endorsement of development under Modi’s leadership. “This is a major transformation for Bengal,” he said, adding that the party’s strategy outmanoeuvred the opposition.
Referring to Modi’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision and ‘Purvodaya’ focus, Majhi said the BJP govts in Anga (Bihar), Banga (Bengal) and Kalinga (Odisha) would play a crucial role in India’s growth story.
Pointing to BJP’s expanding footprint, Majhi said the party is now either in power or the principal opposition in most states except Kerala and Tamil Nadu. He noted that the party performed strongly in constituencies where he campaigned.
Expressing optimism, Majhi said the verdict would bring peace, stability and accelerated development in Bengal, with the new govt expected to deliver “good governance” in line with public aspirations.
