Road accidents drop 41% as awareness rises

Bhopal: Prudence paid off this Holi as road accidents in the state capital fell by 41 % compared to last year, with 39 incidents reported against 66 in 2025.Public awareness about safe celebrations is steadily increasing, said Bhopal Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr Manish Singh, noting that only a few minor cases reached hospitals this year. Patients reported eye irritation, breathing problems and minor injuries, but most were discharged after treatment.Fourteen patients were found with particles of gulal in their eyes, prompting experts to warn against abrasive powders during Rang Panchami. Ophthalmologist Dr SS Kubre of GMC Bhopal said redness and itching are common effects and advised avoiding harmful gulal. According to 108 Ambulance data, the decline was statewide, with 948 accidents recorded across Madhya Pradesh compared to 1,190 last year, a 20 % drop in calls. Sagar reported the highest number of accidents at 67, followed by Vidisha with 55, Indore with 46 and Rewa with 42.Overspeeding and alcohol consumption were cited as the main causes of accidents, with eyewitnesses also pointing to balloons and water thrown at bikers leading to slips. Despite restrictions, chemical colours were widely used, resulting in eye and skin complaints. Officials said the figures reflect growing safety awareness, though reckless driving and chemical colours remain persistent risks.
