Bhopal: As the silver crescent appeared from beneath the gaps of drifting clouds, the streets of old city erupted into a cacophony of cheers, clapping, and fireworks. Eid-ul-Fitr is here.
The narrow streets pulsed with excitement as people from all walks of life descended to experience the once in a year phenomenon — Chand Raat — the night of the moon, a symphony of hustle and bustle, togetherness, and the sweet scent of sheermal wafting from bakeries.
Women pierced through crowds, their hands stained crimson with Heena and faces covered with hijab. Trying on sparkling bangles, their eyes shining bright as they matched them with new dupattas and jewellery, eager to sparkle like the night itself.
The streets brimmed with activity—men queued up at saloons, getting trimmed and shaved for the big day, while others made a last-minute dash to collect clothes from the tailor's shop, the sound of sewing machines humming late into the night. The aroma of kebabs, paya soups, sharbat and tandoori chicken wafted from street stalls, teasing hungry stomachs and building anticipation for the Eid feast. Amidst the chaos, people rushed to buy sheer khurmas, the traditional sweet dish, its creamy richness a staple of the Eid breakfast.
Young men stopped by perfume shops to buy itra, skull caps, and keffiyeh to ensure they look the absolute best when they go to offer the Eid prayers.
In this moment, the old city of Bhopal was a canvas of love, forgiveness, and new beginnings. The chand raat magic had woven its spell, binding hearts and filling the night with the promise of an grand Eid on Saturday.
