Bhopal: A BJP corporator was shot dead in Madhya Pradesh's Datia on Tuesday morning, triggering panic in the district and raising larger concerns over law and order in the state.
The incident took place around 8.30 am at Sevda Chungi Square under Kotwali police station limits of Datia.
Kallu Kushwaha, the BJP corporator from ward number 1, was fired upon from close range by a group of assailants, in full public view. The corporator collapsed and died at the scene, eyewitnesses said. Police registered a case against six persons — Chhotu Kushwaha, Golu Kushwaha, Sudhir Kushwaha, Umesh Kushwaha, Praveen Valmiki and Sahib Singh Yadav — in connection with the murder. Two bullets were pumped into Kushwaha's body, killing him.
Datia SP Suraj Verma told TOI, "The corporator had enmity with several persons. He had recently come out on bail in a murder case. Of the six accused named in the FIR, three — Chhotu, Golu and Sudhir — have been rounded up. "
On Feb 18, 2025, a Datia court sentenced him and five others to life imprisonment in the murder of former corporator Balkishan Kushwaha. He later secured bail from the high court and had been out of jail for about four months.
