Bhopal: As protests continue over the proposed renaming of Barkatullah University to Vagdevi Bhojpal University, the university is considering a compromise aimed at addressing concerns while allowing the renaming process to move forward.
University officials have proposed retaining the Barkatullah name on a prominent campus facility, most likely the central library or the main auditorium. The proposal is being presented as a symbolic gesture to preserve the institution’s historical identity while implementing the state government’s decision.
The move comes in response to demonstrations by students, faculty members and local residents who oppose the removal of the Barkatullah name. Protesters have organised peaceful rallies, submitted petitions and met university authorities, arguing that the name is closely tied to the institution’s legacy and the city’s history.
Officials involved in the discussions said the proposal emerged from efforts to find common ground. “We are sensitive to the sentiments attached to the Barkatullah name,” a senior official said. “Retaining the name on a major facility such as the library or auditorium is a way to preserve that legacy while implementing the state’s decision.”
According to university sources, administrators will be briefed on the proposal, and consultations with stakeholders, including student representatives and faculty members, are expected before any final decision is taken.
Reaction to the proposal has been mixed. Some students described it as a constructive step towards dialogue, while others said it does not meet the protesters’ demand to retain the university’s existing name.
Critics of the renaming argue that assigning Barkatullah’s name to a single building would not adequately reflect its historical and emotional significance. “The name Barkatullah represents generations of alumni and the city’s connection to the university,” said a faculty member who requested anonymity. “Reducing it to a building does not address the broader concerns of the community,” he added.
Supporters of the renaming believe the proposal could provide a practical middle path by balancing administrative objectives with public sentiment. They noted that naming major campus facilities after notable figures is a common way of preserving historical memory.
The state government has not announced a timeline for a final decision. Meanwhile, protesters say they will continue to seek wider consultations and assurances that the university’s heritage will be respected.
